There Is a Cure for Color Blindness

Is there any cure for color blindness? Yes, there is. In this article, we will review the latest treatments & solutions for color vision deficiency.

2007

Researchers showed in a series of experiments, how the color vision abilities of mice can be enhanced. The scientists “pimped” the mice in their experiments with the missing genes for color perception which they took from humans. And those mice performed much better in the test setup than their dichromatic colleagues. 1

2009

Researchers used squirrel monkeys as a model to cure red-green color blindness with gene therapy. Weeks after treatment, the monkeys passed the tests easily for all colors, and the accomplishment was an important step toward developing gene therapy treatments for eye conditions in humans. 2

2020

In a small trial in Germany, an experimental gene therapy improved the vision of nine people with total color blindness, also known as achromatopsia. After receiving the gene therapy, the eight men and one woman in the trial could see some color, as well as more letters on a vision chart. 3

The therapy, which involves a genetically engineered virus, is designed to correct a defect in a gene known as CNGA3. Gene therapy uses viruses because of their natural ability to get inside cells. The viruses are modified, however, so that they can’t cause infection, and they’re also engineered to carry healthy copies of a gene to compensate for a mutated one.

For years, scientists have imagined gene therapy as a way to correct red-green color blindness, the most common type of color vision deficiency. In 2009, researchers had a breakthrough when they cured red-green color blindness in adult monkeys using gene therapy, but there have not been clinical trials yet for gene therapy that aims to correct this type of color blindness in humans. Instead, researchers have focused their efforts on trying to cure the more severe achromatopsia. These trials, which use a similar approach as the one in Germany, are ongoing in the United States and in the U.K. If the approach works, it could open the door to correcting more common forms of color blindness, which are typically inherited.

The German researchers think the therapy will be more effective if patients receive it in childhood when the brain is still able to rewire itself. People with total color blindness have never learned to process color, so their brains might need some plasticity in order to process that information. The researchers plan to enroll children in the next phase of the trial.

This of course is an early trial, and the therapy will need to be tested in more patients before it can be approved. If that happens, it could still be out of reach for many people. A gene therapy designed to restore vision is already on the market, but in the United States, it costs $850,000, or $425,000 per eye. This therapy is called Luxturna, it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in December 2017 for children and adults with a rare genetic mutation that often results in blindness.

To answer the question "Is there any cure for colorblindness?", yes there is but currently, it is not available for everyone, and it's not affordable for many.

Let's Review Other Options That Are Available for Colorblind People;

One of the most common tools is color-blind glasses & lenses, from Enchroma and Pilestone .

However, color-blind glasses will not "cure" color-blindness, they give color-blind individuals an opportunity to see the world more accurately and experience a greater spectrum of colors while wearing the glasses.

Although there are so many positive and negative responses from users of these glasses, in my opinion, if you can afford it take your chance and try them.

Both of the companies have 60 days money-back guarantee (but they may deduct the tax).

PS5 Color Setting for Colorblind Users

There are a few great applications that can help colorblind people, available for iOS and Android. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Apple have developed features in their operating systems to aid color-blind patients. Microsoft added a color filter feature to Windows 10, in which CVD users can alter the color of the screen (windows and all programs) to enhance their color perception, and Similarly, Apple and Google have added this feature to IOS and Android. Even many video games have a color vision setting these days.

If people with color vision deficiency use applications, lenses, glasses to handle their

daily struggles, or even if gene therapy helps them to see all the colors like a normal vision person, there is still a piece missing. That piece is knowledge. Knowledge of how to use and work with colors. Oftentimes, they don't know which colors are good with others, or they just didn't develop that strong of a feeling towards colors, because, from childhood, their experience of colors was different.

What You Need to Do:

Colorblind people usually keep their condition a secret, they ignore any color-related conversations and decisions that somehow may be related to colors. Even when it comes to matching their outfit, black, white, gray, and blue are the most common choices!
